Root Canal Treatment

This treatment is utilized when a crack or cavity has been neglected for a significant period, allowing bacteria to penetrate the tooth's core. Dr. Zahir Billy employs a specialized dental file to eliminate decayed tissue and infection from the tooth pulp during root canal therapy. The pulp chamber, which houses the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues, is the innermost layer of the tooth. Through our root canal therapy procedure, Dr. Zahir Billy can effectively remove the infected tissue, ensuring the tooth's well-being. Consequently, the pain caused by the infection will diminish, and the tooth will be saved from extraction. Dr. Zahir Billy prioritizes your comfort and well-being throughout the root canal therapy process. To ensure painless treatment, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the affected teeth and gums. Our team will maintain constant communication with you throughout the process. The steps involved in completing the root canal treatment include drilling a small hole in the crown of the tooth, removing the infected pulp, sterilizing the root canals, replacing the pulp with gutta-percha, and placing a temporary filling. Once the permanent restoration is ready, you will return to our office for placement of a personalized crown to restore your natural smile. After care: In the days following your root canal procedure, it is crucial to take precautions to avoid irritating or injuring your mouth. After a root canal, your mouth will be swollen and sensitive, so the main objective is to reduce swelling and promote healing. To achieve this, it is recommended that you continue chewing on the side of your mouth that was not treated during the root canal. This will give the treated tooth and affected area sufficient time to recover. Additionally, it is important to be mindful of your food choices during the recovery period. Certain foods and drinks can cause further damage to your mouth, leading to complications and increased pain. To ensure a smooth recovery, follow these guidelines in the days following your root canal surgery: 1. Stick to soft foods: opt for foods that are easy to eat and do not require excessive chewing. 2. Avoid extreme temperatures: Steer clear of overly hot or cold foods and beverages. Instead, choose items that are at a mild temperature because your gums and teeth will be more sensitive to extreme temperatures, which can result in discomfort and pain. 3. Stay away from chewy or sticky foods: These can dislodge the temporary filling or crown. It is also important to avoid chewing gum. 4. Say no to hard foods and substances: Apples, ice, candy, and carrots should be avoided, as they can potentially damage the treated tooth. 5. Steer clear of spicy foods: Spicy foods can irritate sensitive areas, so it is best to avoid them during the recovery period. 6. Avoid alcohol: Drinking alcohol can increase bleeding, so it is advisable to abstain from it during this time. If you are uncertain about what foods you can safely consume, here are a few suggestions:- For breakfast, consider options like scrambled eggs, yogurt, or a smoothie.- Ripe, canned, cooked, or soft fruits make for excellent snacks.- Mashed vegetables and meatloaf are suitable choices for dinner.- Pasta and noodles can also be included in your dinner options.- Lukewarm soup made from cooked vegetables or vegetables blended together.- For dessert, opt for sorbet or frozen yogurt. By following these guidelines and making careful food choices, you can aid in the healing process and ensure a smooth recovery after your root canal procedure.
