Deep cleaning

Deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planning, is a non-surgical procedure performed by dental professionals to treat gum disease and prevent its progression. This advanced cleaning process involves removing plaque and tartar buildup from below the gumline, where regular cleanings cannot reach. The first step, scaling, involves scraping off all the plaque and tartar from the teeth and roots. Then, root planning smooths out rough areas on the roots to prevent bacteria from reattaching. This thorough cleaning not only helps reduce inflammation and bleeding in the gums but also promotes the healing of gum tissue. Deep dental cleanings are typically recommended for patients with moderate to severe gum disease or those who have not had a regular cleaning in an extended period. It is crucial for maintaining good oral health and preventing further complications such as tooth loss or systemic health issues.

Do I need deep cleaning?

Deep dental cleanings, also known as scaling and root planing, are typically recommended by dental professionals when a patient has significant build-up of plaque and tartar, which can lead to periodontal disease if left untreated. It is important to understand that a deep cleaning may not be necessary for everyone. Deep cleanings are recommended in specific situations such as when there are deep pockets, with more than 4 mm between your gums and tooth, or when professional cleanings have not been maintained regularly, with at least twice each year. Symptoms that may indicate the need for a deep cleaning include bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, and gum recession. Additionally, patients with a history of gum disease or those who smoke are at an increased risk for needing a deep cleaning. During this procedure, our dentist; Dr. Zahir Billy, will carefully remove tartar and bacteria from below the gumline to prevent further damage to the teeth and gums. It is important to follow up with regular cleanings and good oral hygiene habits to maintain optimal oral health.
