Frequently asked questions

Do I Need Deep Cleaning? Deep dental cleanings, also known as scaling and root planing, are typically recommended by dental professionals when a patient has significant build-up of plaque and tartar, which can lead to periodontal disease if left untreated. It is important to understand that a deep cleaning may not be necessary for everyone. Deep cleanings are recommended in specific situations such as when there are deep pockets, with more than 4 mm between your gums and tooth, or when professional cleanings have not been maintained regularly, with at least twice each year. Symptoms that may indicate the need for a deep cleaning include bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, and gum recession. Additionally, patients with a history of gum disease or those who smoke are at an increased risk for needing a deep cleaning. During this procedure, our dentist; Dr. Zahir Billy, will carefully remove tartar and bacteria from below the gumline to prevent further damage to the teeth and gums. It is important to follow up with regular cleanings and good oral hygiene habits to maintain optimal oral health. Do we do metal fillings or tooth colored fillings? For minor cavities or small tooth damage, Dr. Zahir Billy may suggest a dental filling. This involves removing the affected area of the tooth and replacing it with a durable filling material. At dental charms we only do tooth colored fillings. What is a dental crown (cap)? A dental crown, also known as a tooth-shaped cap, is utilized by dentists to repair teeth that are weak, broken, or decayed. This cap fits over the entire tooth, resembling a snug hat. Here at Dental Charms, In order to ensure a precise fit, Dr. Zahir Billy will remove a small portion of enamel before securely bonding the crown in place. These crowns are skillfully crafted by dental technicians using different materials such as resin, metal, and porcelain. In cases of larger cavities or fractures, a dental crown may be necessary. This cap covers the entire tooth, providing strength and protection against further harm. dental caps are same as crowns. What is dental bridges? Dental bridges are used to fill in gaps left by missing teeth. By restoring chewing function and improving oral health, they can also enhance your overall appearance. A dental bridge typically includes crowns that are placed over adjacent natural teeth and artificial teeth that span the empty space in your smile. What is root canal treatments? Root canal treatment is necessary when bacteria from a cavity or crack infect the tooth pulp. This procedure involves removing inflamed nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues from inside the tooth. Dr. Zahir Billy will then clean the inside tooth surfaces and fill the pulp chamber and root canals with a filling material. In most cases, a crown is also needed to protect and strengthen the tooth. What is dental extractions? tooth extraction is performed when saving a natural tooth is not possible, usually due to severe damage. During this procedure, Dr. Zahir Billy will carefully remove the tooth from its socket and clean out any infection. If a tooth extraction is necessary, discuss replacement options with Dr. Zahir Billy at Dental Charms. Once you have healed from the extraction, he can replace the tooth with a dental bridge or dental implant. Alternatively, he can provide you with a temporary tooth until the permanent replacement is ready.
